Departmental Web Administrator

Reports to the Assistant Director for Communication at the Duke Global Health Institute. Has responsibility for maintaining ongoing functioning and aesthetics of the DGHI website and micro-sites created for DGHI partners. Works closely with DGHI team members to advise on how to organize and present information on the website and effective strategies for incorporating Web 2.0 technologies, videos and photos. Ensures regular updates of existing web pages content and creates new pages and functionalities within the Expression Engine content management system in consultation with DGHI staff. Provides leadership and guidance for DGHI's web presence and uses of networked technologies for communication, education and research.

Work performed

  • Maintain and expand current website, including creating new pages with information provided by team members, link checking, ensuring that university standards are met, and other steps to ensure integrity and functionality of website.
  • Implement coding for new functionalities, such as searchable databases, interactive maps, interface with Duke or DGHI databases, etc. Requires ability to learn Expression Engine content management system.
  • Develop from inception or implement software to provide Web 2.0/social media functionality allowing users to tag, comment, rate, bookmark, and otherwise organize and contribute to content at the web site.
  • Ensure content is refreshed and updated according in a timely manner.
  • Monitor website usage trends and recommend website changes based on user behavior.
  • Create and maintain simple webpages/blogs for subgroups, affiliated centers, programs or taskforces.
  • Train student workers how to post items to web pages.
  • Manipulate photos and graphics to best display on web.
  • Manage technical details of preparing and sharing digital information (photos/videos/articles) with other online Duke sites such as DukeToday, iTunesU, YouTube/Duke, Duke Research, etc.
  • Work closely with Assistant Director of Communication to ensure consistent messaging (visual and written) on website.
  • Effectively manage, warehouse and catalog web site content assets.
  • Research and advocate new ways of incorporating electronic information and communication into the current website to make them more interactive and/or user-friendly; implement new search engine functionalities to increase effectiveness and efficiency
  • Attend staff meetings, project meetings, and create other ways to remain abreast of DGHI priorities and projects.
  • Post weekly electronic newsletter.
  • Ensure that the site is designed and tagged to optimize its prevalence in web searches
  • Thoroughly document procedures and policies related to development of DGHI digital technologies (e.g. updates, backups, archiving, maintenance, access rights, etc.)

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and minimum of 2 years related experience in web development and programming, with a strong foundation in PHP, SQL, Javascript, HTML, XML, and CSS
  • Experience with interface design, Expression Engine content management system or similar content management system, and Web 2.0/social media programming
  • Experience editing and optimized video footage and photos for use on the web
  • Must be a highly organized, detail-oriented self-starter who works well independently as well in a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to work with a variety of staff
  • Understanding of basic web design aesthetics (typography, graphic design, use of photos, etc)

Minimum Qualifications Education: BA or BS in journalism, marketing, English, graphic design or related field.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years applicable experience required.
  • Graphic experience or background preferred.
  • Proficiency with PC based environment in all Microsoft office products, HTML, Dreamweaver, Java Script, Acrobat, and some type of image editing product (Photoshop, etc.
